OpenAI's assistant with memory, projects, agent mode and custom GPTs; the second brain most teams already have.

What it is

ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant on the web, desktop and mobile. Beyond chat it offers memory across conversations, Projects that hold files and instructions for one piece of work, an agent mode that browses and completes multi-step tasks, deep research reports with citations, voice, image generation, code execution for data analysis, custom GPTs you can share inside a company, and connectors to workspace tools and MCP servers. Plans range from Free to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise; the same account signs in to the Codex coding agent, so a team on Business plans gets both the assistant and a terminal agent.

Both chatgpt.com and openai.com sit behind a bot challenge, so this card has no screenshot; open the URL to see the current product page.

Where it fits in the AI OS

Personal & corporate AI OS, the assistant layer for people and teams who standardized on OpenAI. In a two-vendor company it is also the independent second opinion on any document or plan, the same role Codex CLI plays for code.

How Serge's stack uses it

The project's ideas taxonomy treats Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor together as one topic ("techniques, skills, hooks, memory") and uses Codex CLI from OpenAI as the second code reviewer. How ChatGPT itself is used is not documented publicly.

Setup in 5 minutes

  1. Sign up, install the desktop app, turn on memory and check what it already remembers.
  2. Create a Project for your company with the same positioning and tone notes you keep in CLAUDE.md.
  3. Run one deep research request on a competitor and read the sources it cites, not only the summary.
  4. Build one custom GPT for a repeated task (turn a transcript into a Linear-ready list) and share it with the team.
  5. Connect one workspace source and ask a question you know the answer to.

Alternatives

  • Gemini — best if the company lives in Google Workspace.
  • Perplexity — search-first answers with citations.
  • Copilot (Microsoft 365) — for Microsoft-standardized companies.
